PICC line: home care and monitoring
A PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) allows certain treatments to be administered over a long period without the need for repeated injections. It is maintained at home by a trained nurse.
Catheter care
- Rinsing in accordance with the medical protocol
- Changing the dressing under sterile conditions
- Monitoring the insertion point
- Administration of prescribed infusions
Signs to look out for
Redness, pain, swelling, fever: any unusual symptoms should be reported to the nurse or doctor straight away. Close monitoring prevents most complications.
