PICC line: home care and monitoring

A PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) allows certain treatments to be administered over a long period without the need for repeated injections. It is maintained at home by a trained nurse.

Catheter care

  • Rinsing in accordance with the medical protocol
  • Changing the dressing under sterile conditions
  • Monitoring the insertion point
  • Administration of prescribed infusions

Signs to look out for

Redness, pain, swelling, fever: any unusual symptoms should be reported to the nurse or doctor straight away. Close monitoring prevents most complications.
