Wound care: supporting the healing process effectively

A wound that is not properly managed can lead to complications. The nurse’s role is to ensure the wound is dressed appropriately, to monitor its progress and to alert the doctor if there are any signs of infection.

Simple and complex wounds

A distinction is made between simple wounds (minor cuts, stitches) and complex wounds (ulcers, pressure sores, chronic or extensive wounds), which require specific protocols and equipment.

Regular monitoring

  • Cleaning and dressing appropriate to the type of wound
  • Monitoring for signs of infection
  • Adjusting the treatment plan with the doctor
  • Patient and family education

Continuity of care is essential: wherever possible, the same team should manage the wound from the outset right through to healing.
